Rippling notes of Gershwin accompanied muted conversations in Diogenes Bar. Earlier I’d made plans to spend time here. I was in the bar this evening, but not as I had hoped. Jimmy was my companion instead of Kent and Rosie. There was to be no celebration for the Riordan clan. Sophia’s proclamations tonight had changed the course of many lives. She’d accused Jimmy of adultery and attempted murder. She’d plucked a fortune from the grasp of the Riordans.

Jimmy upended his glass, gestured to the waiter for another.

My own glass was still almost full. “Jimmy, alcohol isn’t the answer.” My tone was mild.

“I know.” But when the fresh drink came, he took a deep swallow, his eyes hurt and angry. “Stupid to drink when your world goes to hell. I don’t usually. I guess getting drunk is better than thinking. It’s taking the edge off. You know what?” He drank again. Too much. Too quickly.

“What?” I’d spent my life with words, fine, crazy, beautiful, wonderful, haunting words, yet sometimes the right word doesn’t come. To tell him Sophia was incapable of love was to tell him he’d given his name and heart to an illusion. But wasn’t that what Sophia had made starkly clear?

He cradled the glass in his hands, graceful, gentle, generous hands, and looked into the depths of the golden whiskey. “It’s not supposed to be all about me. Maybe that’s what I’m realizing. What rubs me raw is that Sophia would think I’m capable of murder, not to mention unfaithfulness. That’s all wrong. I ought to be devastated that I’ve lost her, wild to get her back.” His stare was open, sad, chagrined. “I don’t give a damn. What hurts is not losing her, it’s losing the idea she cared for me. That’s not what marriage is supposed to be. I know what a good marriage is. Margaret and I believed in each other. Always. Just like you and Richard. Good times, bad times, we knew we could count on each other. There are going to be bad times, times that tear your guts out. That’s when you have to know the person you love will be there beside you. So”—he tossed down the rest of the drink—“maybe I deserve to be as damned as Sophia.”

“Jimmy, give it a rest. Tomorrow I’ll talk to her—”

His face abruptly turned hard and cold. “About me? Thanks, Henrie O, but no thanks. Sophia and I are finished. I’ll get reservations for you and me out of Helsinki. You’ll be home, back to your world, by Sunday.”

I had a quick memory of Val’s cry when Evelyn recalled the dream of Vic that she had not acted upon. I still carried with me a dark sense of foreboding, an awareness of a pulsating anger that had not been sated. I was fearful for Sophia.

“Sophia’s still in danger.” I felt it deep inside.

Jimmy rubbed one temple. “The ravening Riordans? I don’t think so. Tonight spiked their chances. Sophia’s on guard. Even though she’s picked me as suspect number one, she’ll be careful.
